Members of Slovenian fraternals AMLA http://americanmutual.org, SNPJ www.snpj.org, KSKJ www.kskjlife.org and AFU www.afu-life.com celebrated summer with a Balina Beach Party at the Slovenian Workmen's Home on Waterloo Road in Cleveland, Ohio. Players and partiers enjoyed rounds of balina, as well as button box beach music and Slovenian fast food from the courtside kitchen. Charlie and Karen Shaver coordinated the event with input from each organization. Everyone involved had so much fun, they hope to host another balina bash soon.

St. Vitus Parish, established in Aug. 1893 as the first American Slovenian Roman Catholic parish in the state of Ohio and Diocese of Cleveland, will have its annual parish picnic on JULY 18, 2010 (SUNDAY) at Slovenska Pristava, a recreational facility located in Harpersfield , Ohio . There is no admission or parking charge on July 18.
The picnic will officially begin with a Mass at 12:00 (Noon) in the main pavilion. The principal celebrant will be Father Joseph Boznar, pastor, St. Vitus. Fr. Boznar is observing his 40th Year of Ordination to The Priesthood and has been pastor at St Vitus since 1979....

A FINAL FAREWELL...(St Lawrence Church in Cleveland, Ohio)
In the first half of the 20th century, people were identified from the parish or neighborhood that they called home. The parish family was closely knit and gossip, folklore, fables, true facts and family nuances were freely disseminated. Slovenian immigrants from the early 1900’s tended to raise large families. I recall that on three streets alone (E. 80th, 81st, and E. 82nd,) there were roughly 120 homes with over 600 children born during the 20’s and 30’s; the average family at 5.4 children.
From these strong beginnings, St. Lawrence parish became the hub of all social, religious, and cultural activities
